Fiber Crimp Characterization by Image Analysis

Abstract
A method for rapidly and quantitatively measuring the two-dimensional crimp geometry of fibers using commercially available automatic Image Analysis instrumentation is described. The crimp frequency of a filament deknitted from a fabric is shown to be a useful indicator of fabric bulk. A macroscope device and a scheme for the measurement of three-dimensional geometry of crimp are outlined.
