The underlying illness is listed in 22 patients in whom the diagnosis of Wernicke’s encephalopathy was made at necropsy. The large variety of these illnesses is stressed. It is suggested that too much stress is laid upon chronic alcoholism as the underlying illness, which may result in under-diagnosing Wernicke’s encephalopathy in other conditions.
