Tertiary sequence at upper Tengawai River, South Canterbury

Abstract
A nearly continuous Eocene to Pliocene sequence is preserved in a graben along the upper Tengawai Riv.er. Strata in upward succession are: basement greywacke; Arnold coal measures and marine sandstone; Landon glauconitic siltstone and limestone; Lower Pareora siltstone; Upper Pareora and ?Southland shell beds and sandstone; Southland and Wanganui coal measures and conglomerate. Preliminary lists of Foraminifera and macrofossils are given. The Pareora sediments were previously regarded as Waitakian in age. The ages of the younger marine strata are discussed in some detail in an appendix.
