The disuse phenomenon of the leg is a common, frequently misdiagnosed condition characterized by pain, tenderness, limitation of motion, and limping after some insult or injury to the extremity. It is the result of failure of the patient to become rehabilitated normally. The syndrome develops in poorly motivated individuals who are fearful and have low pain thresholds. Often the fears are iatrogenic in origin because of the prescription of unusually prolonged bed rest or inactivity. It usually is curable.
