Abstract
New data on the Ba photoabsorption spectrum in the region of 5p-subshell excitation are presented and compared with Ba2+/Ba+ production rates. It is shown that step one of the two-step autoionisation mechanism is different from the excitation scheme which was originally proposed. Furthermore, an energy condition is deduced from the observations, and provides new insight into the two-step mechanism. Keywords
