Fine Particles of Titanium Prepared by Gas Evaporation

Abstract
The crystal structure and the crystal habit of Ti particles are studied by electron microscopy. The particles grown in the intermediate zone show the hcp structure of the low temperature phase, but the crystal habit is a truncated rhombic dodecahedron characteristic of the bcc structure of the high temperature phase. Since the lattice relation between the observed hcp structure and the corresponding bcc structure coincides with that of martensite transformation, it is concluded that the Ti particles are transformed martensitically to the hcp structure after nucleation with the bcc structure. An unknown structure at the corners of the hcp particles is also found.
