Measurement of compression and tension: Some applications

Abstract

Stress can be equated to vertical and horizontal fault displacements. Plotted on a map of New Zealand, the pattern of isallo-stress lines corresponds with that of Bouguer gravity anomalies. The regions of tension correspond with those of large negative gravity anomaly, while the compressional regions correspond with those of small negative and of positive gravity anomalies.
