Carbonic anhydrase was demonstrated in mantle tissues and body fluids of most of 12 spp. of pelecypods and 8 spp. of gastropods. Its presence suggested the possibility of importance in shell formation in most spp. but negligible activity in some indicated they might deposit shell in its absence.
