Immunoglobulin Levels in Retinal Vascular Abnormalities and Pseudoxanthoma Elasticum

Abstract

The immunoelectrophoretic pattern and immunoglobulin G, A, and M concentration of patients with retinal vascular abnormalities and pseudoxanthoma elasticum were examined. None of the patients lacked any of the three major immunoglobulins. The average concentration of γG, γA, and γM immunoglobulin was within normal limits in eight cases of Coats' disease; the average concentration of γG and γA immunoglobulin was elevated in four patients with Eales' disease and in eight with pseudoxanthoma elasticum. Possible explanations for these findings are discussed, and the need for further tests of serum from additional patients in each category indicated.
