Effect of Electroconvulsive Shock on Adrenal Cortex of the Rat

Abstract
A series of 10 electroconvulsive shocks admd. to albino rats resulted in enlargement of the adrenals as compared with controls. Shock was admd. to other groups of rats during either ether or nembutal anesthesia; the adrenals of these rats were no larger than the controls. These circumstances of shock are similar to those affecting behavior in the rat. The coincident changes in adrenal size and in behavior may indicate that the endocrine changes may mediate the effects of electroconvulsive shocks on the behavior of the rat.
