The statistical concept of a correlation coefficient r is frequently misused in interpreting analytical data. In particular, a large value of r does not indicate a linear relationship between two measurements; this is demonstrated graphically. For many of the problems for which a correlation coefficient is used it would be better to present a scatterplot.
