Dispersion Oxygenation for Effecting Survival of Dogs Breathing Pure Nitrogen for Prolonged Periods.

Abstract
A method for oxygenation of the blood by gas dispersion, previously described by the authors, has been tested by circulating and oxygenating the blood from dogs breathing pure N2. An easily constructed plastic pump is descr. Morphine sedation and local anesthesia were used for insertion of the venous catheters. The largest dog surviving the expts. weighed 14 kg. and the longest period of N2 breathing was 1 hr. for a surviving dog. If a minimum blood flow of 40 ml./kg./min. was maintained the dogs survived the expt. without loss of consciousness and recovered completely without any neurological signs of anoxic damage__Authors.
