Periodontal Lesions in Hypercitricemia: Effect of Adrenal Cortical Hormones on the Blood Citric Acid Level and the Periodontal Tissues

Abstract
Citric acid content in blood is significantly increased in scorbutic guinea pigs. The scorbutic hypercitricemia is alleviated by cortisone administration. Conversely, ACTH and DOC increase this hypercitricemia. These results show that adrenal-cortical hormones are also involved in the formation or destruction of citric acid. Under the hypercitricemic conditions, periodontal tissues developed severe degenerative changes.
