Abstract
A phenomenological hysteresis model for the magnetomechanical constitutive law in highly magnetostrictive materials is proposed. Magnetization and strain are represented using a set of noninteracting particles. Any change in magnetization or strain in individual particles is assumed to be obstructed by a counterforce analogous to mechanical dry friction. Comparisons have been made with experiments performed on Terfenol-D under varying field and/or stress with satisfactory results.
