Abstract
A detailed procedure for preparing a "phosphorus-free" protein hydrolysate and medium capable of supporting excellent growth of group A hemolytic streptococci in combination with other chemically defined constituents was described. The medium was able to support excellent growth under circumstances of a controlled supply of P. It was also observed that the enzymatic protein hydrolysate contained a factor or factors needed for rapid growth of hemolytic streptococci. This activity may be related to strepogenin.
