Codling Moth Oöcyte Studies

Abstract
At the Kearneysville Expt. Sta. in 1941 large numbers of Carpocapsa pomonella (19,000) were trapped in bait pails in an 18-acre orchard without effecting a reduction of injured fruit. Oocyte counts of female moths caged 1, 3, 6, 9, and 12 days were compared with those of moths caught in bait pails, by staining and dissection. Counts varied somewhat with seasonal temps. and age of moths. Much higher counts were obtained from confined moths than from trapped moths, indicating that considerable oviposition had taken place before the moths were attracted to bait pails.
