Abstract
An unsuspected vertical migration rhythm of freshwater epipelic algae has been shown to occur and persist over several days when pond sediments are transferred to the laboratory. The rhythm continues in natural light/ dark conditions and a lesser extent also under continuous light and continuous dark treatment. Diatoms, flagellates and Cyanophyta have all been shown to undergo this rhythm. The diatoms also exhibit a rhythm of cell division. The data is compared with that from other experiments and the biological advantages of such a rhythm are briefly discussed.
