Abortion and Coagulation by Prostaglandin

Abstract
The coagulation and fibrinolytic systems of 20 patients undergoing abortion with intra-amniotically instilled dinoprost tromethamine (prostaglandin F2α were studied. In contrast to the technique of intraamniotically instilled hypertonic sodium chloride solution, in the patients receiving dinoprost tromethamine, no appreciable alteration in coagulation or fibrinolytic systems was observed. The alterations in platelet count, fibrinogen concentration, and fibrinogen-fibrin degradation products seen with intra-amniotically given hypertonic sodium chloride solution are possibly due to the destructive action of the high concentration of sodium chloride on the intra-amniotic contents.
