If renaming fractions is difficult for your students, try using the dot method. Renaming fractions by the dot method has been used successfully with students from grade 3 through grade 12. The method requires no prior knowledge of multiplication facts, common factors, or greatest common factors. It can be used to introduce renaming at the manipulative level in a meaningful way prior to moving to a more abstract level where prime factorization will be involved.
