Abstract
The device for sowing spores uniformly is a glass cylinder 2 cm. wide and 5 cm. long. A cylinder of very fine-meshed bolting cloth of the same length fits the cylinder closely at one end, while the other end is closed by a cork through whose center a glass tube for filling and adjusting reaches the bottom of the cylinder. When closed by the cork the apparatus serves as a sterilized container. The device for growing spores is a circular zinc box 25 cm. in diam. and 6 cm. deep. The lid has a circular opening 15 cm. in diam. which is flared up 12 mm. as is also the outer rim to contain a layer of water. The sides are made of very fine brass wire gauze. Flush with the central opening is placed the culture of spores and over this a low bell glass with an opening in the top for watering and aerating.
