Myocardial Revascularization During Postinfarction Shock

Abstract
If measures are taken swiftly enough to halt the advance of necrosis in the infarcted myocardium by reducing its work and improving its oxygen supply, even patients in cardiogenic shock can be saved. A staged approach is described; it calls for a trial of circulatory assistance via balloon counterpulsation followed, if necessary, by aortocoronary bypass grafting in patients whose myocardial loss is not prohibitive.
