Abstract
I wish in this paper to examine some of the difficulties a therapist can encounter in the treatment of psychologically ill patients by individual psychoanalytically oriented therapy within the setting of a hospital community, particularly when he is responsible not only for the therapy itself but for the total management of the patient outside of sessions as well. I think that many of my colleagues in the same position will have had similar experiences to my own, but I cannot generalize too much and must be held solely responsible for the difficulties encountered as well as for my account of them.
