Angular Correlation Measurements in the Decay ofHg197

Abstract
Measurements of the eK, eL, and eMγ, eL+MeK and eL, and γγ angular correlation coefficients in sources of different chemical compositions in the 132(M4)52(E2)12 cascade of 24-hour Hg197 have been carried out in a study of the effects of extranuclear fields on angular correlation measurements. Measurement of the γγ correlation in dilute mercuric nitrate solutions yields A2=0.214±0.037 in agreement with the theoretical value for this cascade. Solid Hg(NO3)2 sources show an attenuation of the γγ coefficient, g2=0.51±0.16. The eKγ coefficients are attenuated relative to the theoretical coefficients by the factor g2=0.47±0.03. The role of the effects of internal conversion on the attenuation of correlation coefficients is examined in terms of these measurements and those of other authors on Hg197, Hg199, and Ta181.
