Abstract
Factors influencing lactation were studied in 1000 [female][female], with recommendations of a technic increasing the incidence of satisfactory lactation from 88.6% in the 1st 500 to 95% in the 2nd 500. These include 1st suckling infants at 12 hrs. instead of 24 hrs.; the no. and length of feeding periods; complete emptying of the breasts by pumping after feeding; no supplemental feedings unless serious symptoms of dehydration occur; prevention of mastitis by careful breast care; control of psychic influences; and stimulation of lactation by xanthine diuretics or a prep. of Agnus castus. Pituitary extracts, applied as ointments or as rectal suppositories, were not of value. Duration of lactation is also considered.
