The Regular Reflection of X-rays from Quartz Crystals Oscillating Piezoelectrically

Abstract
Laue patterns from quartz crystals oscillating piezoelectrically have been observed to be more intense than similar patterns from nonoscillating crystals. In this investigation, regular Bragg reflections from the face of crystals oscillating and nonoscillating have been observed in order to notice any variation in intensity or line width. No effect of this kind has been observed. These results are interpreted as negating the existence of Zwicky blocks, rocking slightly by the piezoelectric oscillations, as proposed by Langer. An explanation of the observed effect with Laue spots based upon the extinction effect in perfect crystals is proposed.
