Abstract
A discussion is given of the requirements for observing strong level-crossing signals in stepwise fluorescence, where the state under investigation is optically excited via an intermediate state, the atom absorbing in the process two photons of different wavelengths. Data obtained using this technique are presented for fine-structure crossings in the term of Li.
