Microwave Spectra and Molecular Structures of Methyl Cyanide and Methyl Isocyanide

Abstract
Certain of the pure rotational lines of methyl cyanide and methyl isocyanide have been measured and the following molecular properties have been obtained. The moments of inertia, IB, × 104 g cm2, are: for C12 H3 C12 N14, 91.2034; for C12 H3 C13 N14, 91.2486; for C12 D3 C12 N14, 106.7666; for C12 D3 C13 N14, 106.8948; for C12 H3 N14 C12, 83.4550; for C12 H3 N14 C13, 86.5277; for C12 D3 N14 C12, 97.7579; and for C12 D3 N14 C13, 101.3391. The molecular dimensions are: for CH3CN, dCH=1.092A, dCC=1.460A, dCN=1.158A, and ∠ HCH=109°8′; for CH3NC, dCH=1.094A, dCN=1.427A, dNC=1.167A, and ∠ HCH=109°46′. The nuclear coupling for N14 is -4.35 Mc/sec. in CH3CN and is <|0.5| in CH3NC.
