Lack of Effect of Folic Acid on Scurvy in Guinea Pigs

Abstract

A relationship between ascorbic acid and folic acid has been indicated by the observation of the frequent association of scurvy with megaloblastic anemia in infants and the response of folic acid deficient rats to ascorbic acid. To determine the effect of folic acid on ascorbic acid deficiency, growing guinea pigs on a scorbutogenic diet were given folic acid subcut. A control group of animals was given normal saline. The cumulative mortality rates of the 2 groups were identical.
