Abstract
The C13nuclear magnetic resonance spectra of nitrobenzene and nine methylnitrobenzenes have been obtained and analyzed. Steric inhibition of conjugation leads to marked increases in para carbon shieldings in the ortho methyl compounds. The observed shielding changes are in good agreement with those calculated from earlier theoretical and experimental studies of such inhibition and the dependence of para shieldings on π‐electron densities established previously.Keywords
