Abstract
The present state of British Triassic studies and the origin of this symposium is briefly summarized. The inadequate nature of the present nomenclature is discussed. It is contended that the terms 'Bunter' and 'Keuper' should be abandoned and formation names in standard form given for all the rocks concerned. The value of lithostratigraphical correlation is emphasized and it is maintained that, in the case of the Trias, it is probably closer to a truly chronological correlation than is generally realized. This is especially true if one matches similar events in sedimentological successions rather than straight lithologies. The possible application of the standard Alpine stage names to the British Trias on this basis is suggested.
