Abstract
The extinction coefficient of white and colored light in the silver sand of commerce and in marine soils is considered and shown to vary with the type of soil. The significance of the extinction coefficient and albedo of a soil is discussed in relation to soil-dwelling organisms. Light of c. 4950 A wavelength is shown to have a low coefficient of extinction in relation to the other wavelengths considered.
