HISTOCHEMICAL DEMONSTRATION OF ADENOSINE TRIPHOSPHATASE IN OSTEOCLASTS

Abstract
In this investigation, the histochemical activity of mito-chondrium-like structures in osteoclasts was dependent upon the present of ATP, Mg ions and sulfhydryl groups, was enhanced by DNP (2,4-dinitrophenol) and glutathione, and was slightly inhibited by ADP. Although osteoblasts were similar in their dependence on ATP and the presence of sulfhydryl groups, the lack of dependence on Mg ions and the absence of stimulation by DNP and glutathione indicates a difference in the dephosphorylating enzyme.
