Abstract
Conclusions drawn by Bransden et al. (see ibid., vol.12, p.3775 (1979)) on the adequacy of a class of equivalent exchange potentials based on a comparison with an exact solution of the electron-hydrogen three-state close-coupling problem are revised. New calculations using an algebraic variational method show that the previous 'exact' results for the 2p-2p transition were in error, so that the equivalent exchange potential results are in fact an adequate approximation at impact energies above 30 eV. In particular the 2s-2p and 2p-2p results are well reproduced. Keywords
