Older Women Caring for Disabled Spouses: A Model for Supportive Services

Abstract
With the emphasis on long term care of the elderly shifting from institutional to community-based services, the critical role of caregivers in the support network is gaining more recognition. This paper identifies a particularly high-risk group of caregivers — older women caring for disabled spouses — and examines the issues and special problems they face. A multi-service project designed to provide support and respite is described. Implications for policy and practice are discussed and recommendations for further study made.
