CHANGES IN THE HYPOPHYSIS AND THE OVARIES OF RATS CHRONICALLY TREATED WITH AN ANTERIOR PITUITARY EXTRACT

Abstract
Continuous treatment with a pig pituitary extract (method of prep. described) resulted in a transient increase in ovarian wt. due to the formation of many corpora lutea. The peak of increase was reached more rapidly in adult rats, but was more pronounced in immature rats. In hypophysectomized animals the peak was somewhat delayed. Then ovarian size retrogressed, and "signet ring" cells appeared in the hypophysis. The ovaries became resistant not only to gonadotropic action of the extract but also to implants of rat hypophysis.
