THE ORIGIN OF CARBON ATOMS 4, 5, AND 6 OF RICININE

Abstract
Degradations to isolate the carbon atoms at positions 4,5, and 6 of the alkaloid ricinine from Ricinus communis L. are described. Tracer experiments with glycerol-1-14C and glycerol-2-14C suggest that glycerol or a closely related metabolic compound is a biosynthetic precursor of these carbon atoms.
