CRYPTOCOCCUS NEOFORMANS INFECTION OF THE CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM: A CASE TREATED BY AMPHOTERICIN B, WITH POSTMORTEM EXAMINATION

Abstract
A case of Cryptococcus neoformans meningitis, studied throughout its course of two and a half years, with complete post mortem examination, is reviewed in detail. Associated lymphosarcoma, rheumatoid spondylitis, and steroid medication are discussed. Treatment was with amphotericin B. Post mortem study revealed massive bilateral adrenal destruction, in addition to skin, lymph node and kidney invasion by Cryptococcus, although no remains of infection were found in the nervous system.
