Investigations into the purity of samples of diptheria toxin are reviewed and their bearing on the conclusion that can be drawn from immunochemical evidence is discussed. It appears that samples that contain about 3000 Lf units per mg N are pure in the sense that they consist mainly of a single homogeneous substance, although they may still contain small amounts of impurities.
