The Kidney in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

Abstract
The natural history of the renal lesion in systemic lupus erythematosus is surveyed; emphasizing its frequent occurrence and its predilection for younger patients. The structural alterations as seen by conventional microscopy, immunofluorescent microscopy and electron microscopy are described. The clinical features of renal involvement, with emphasis on its ominous prognosis, are outlined and the evolution to a ne-phrotic syndrome or severe renal insufficiency emphasized. Results of therapy, particularly with steroids, are given.
