Abstract
By submerging leaves in sterile distilled water, large numbers of floating conidia of the tetraradiate and sigmoid types were observed. The conidia were most abundant on decayed leaves of angiosperm trees; all leaves were collected from high, well-drained sites at some distance from streams or other water bodies. Species of the following freshwater hyphomycete genera were among those obtained in pure culture: Alatospora, Articulospora, Flagellospora, Ingoldia, Tetracladium, Tricellula, Tricladium, Varicosporium, and Volucrispora. Conidia of other types, including both tetraradiate and sigmoid forms, were observed but not isolated. The abundance of the conidia in terrestrial habitats suggests that some of these fungi are primarily terrestrial organisms. Local dispersal of the conidia appears to occur on the film of water covering leaves and other plant debris.
