Abstract
The coupled Ising chain model for rare-earth systems with metal sublattice space group P63/mmc is extended to include larger clusters of chains. The specific heat is determined numerically as a function of temperature in the eight chain case by the transfer matrix method. Approximate analytical expressions are also derived using the high temperature series method. Good agreement with the experimental results for NdCl3 is obtained. Keywords
