The N.M.R. spectrum of ethene in a nematic solvent

Abstract
The N.M.R. spectrum of ethene, oriented in the nematic phase of 4,4′-di-n-hexyloxyazoxybenzene, has been measured and interpreted. The absolute signs of the indirect coupling constants and the ratio x = r cis/tr gem have been determined. This ratio is compared with data derived from electron diffraction, infra-red and Raman spectroscopy. The agreement is satisfactory. A discussion is given of vibrational corrections; the importance of anharmonicity is stressed.
