Vascular and Intravascular Responses To Various Contrast Media

Abstract

Direct microscopic observation of reactions of blood cells and peripheral blood vessels to various contrast materials revealed adverse responses in some cases. These included arterial and venous constriction, either local or general, crenation of red blood cells, adherence of white blood cells to vessel walls and clumping and adherence of platelets. Renovist caused none of the above mentioned reactions and no change in vessel diameters. Hypaque-M 90% caused arterial and venous vessels to dilate and stopped venous vasomotion. The cellular elements were unaffected.
