Abstract
Hughes (1960) described the respiratory cycle of Scyliorhinus as commencing with a contraction of the oro-and para-branchial cavities; this phase occupies about one quarter of a cycle and is succeeded by an expansion of these cavities which is rapid at first and terminates in a pause before the next respiration. A similar series of events occurs in the dogfish Squalus acanthias L.Keywords
