Abstract
The equations for the size and the work of formation of two- and three-dimensional crystal nuclei on foreign substrates have been established. In the general case of an orthorhombic parallelepiped calculations were made using the free surface energy or respectively the free boundary energy and in the case of the extended Kossel crystal using the mean work of separation according to Stranski and Kaischew . The works of formation in homogeneous, heterogeneous and oriented nucleation from vapour or liquid are discussed. Four regions with different kinds of mechanism of formation can be defined, if both supersaturation and the difference between the works of separation of indigenous and foreign particles are chosen as parameters. The conditions for the formation of adsorption mixed crystals were examined.
