Abstract
In The Netherlands the Organization for the Improvement of Inland Fisheries (O.V.B.) breeds carp for stocking angling waters. Yearly stockings amount to about 100,000 kg. Until recent years nearly all of these carp were descended from various highly domesticated strains, for the greater part mirror-type pond carp. "Pond" or "domesticated" carp diner in a number of properties from wild carp (STEFFENS, 1964; BODDEKE,1966). The former show various characteristics acquired during artificial selection especially for higher yield of flesh. At present the aim of selective carp breeding is a different one, that is establishing a strain of carp especially suitable for angling.
