Abstract
The tendency toward maintenance of a stable or preferred body weight has been demonstrated experimentally in both rodents and humans. Resistance of the chronically obese to long-term maintenance of weight loss may be a pathologic manifestation of that physiologic drive, governed by a central mechanism. New findings supporting that hypothesis are analyzed. Keywords
