Contributions to the Hyperfine Field in Europium Intermetallics

Abstract
Mössbauer studies of EuxYb1xAl2, EuxYb1xCu2, EuxLa1xAl2, and EuAl4 at low temperatures and in external fields yield the three major contributions to the hyperfine field. In Eu metal, EuCu2, EuAl2, and EuAl4, these are (i) core polarization Hcore340 kOe, (ii) central-ion conduction-electron polarization Hop=190±20,140±20,105±20,and 50±20 kOe, (iii) neighbor contributions Hn=115±20,10±10,45±10,0±10 kOe. The local-ion contribution Hcore+Hop seems to be correlated to the isomer shift. The field of Eu2+ in YbAl2, Eu2+ in LaAl2, and Gd3+ in YAl2 are -235±20, -205±10, and -140 kOe, respectively. This yields +95±20 kOe for the contribution to the hyperfine field of the additional conduction electron in GdAl2 relative to EuAl2 and -65±10 kOe to the screening effect in Eu2+ in La3+ Al2 relative to Gd3+ in
