Abstract
If the clear distance between two metal ions in plotted vs. the nearest neighbour distance an interesting fact is fond that all the superconducting elements fall in a certain region of the plot. This region is called the island of superconductivity. It is postulated that the communal entropy of the metallic crystal structure due to sharing of the available volume by the metal ions, together with the valency of the elements, plays a prominent role in determining the occurence of superconductivity. A number of known facts are discussed on this basis. Keywords
