Abstract
Neuronal numbers in the neonatal rat superior cervical ganglion were estimated from counts made on paraffin wax sections stained with cresyl violet. The neuronal population apparently remains fairly stable at approximately 35,000 during the first 30 days postpartum, and there is no histogenic neuronal loss during this period. Moreover, histochemical studies using the acid-phosphatase reaction have also indicated that there is little or no neuronal degeneration during this period.
